Day 2
This day started off well, and for the most part, was a good day.
Went for breakfast at the Little Depot Diner in Peabody. It is a small diner car, with 15 stools at a counter. Quite small, but the food was up to expectations. DDD restaurant #1.
Headed for Salem, and, after having some trouble finding parking at my first destination, went to my second destination, the Salem Wax Museum, and its sister attraction, the Salem Witch Village. I had a guided tour of that location, which covered the history surrounding witches beginning in Europe after the end of the crusades. It was very informative. One thing I learned was that there were 5 men executed as well as 15 women. I had never known about the men before.
At the wax museum, it was a self guided tour, with wax figures made, I believe, at Madame Tousseau's in London.
From there, I went to the Witch Dungeon Museum. They put on a dramatization of part of one of the witch trials. It was quite well done. They also gave some historical information. Some of it was new. After the trial, we were taken into the dungeon. It is a replica of the real one. It seems that back in the 1950's, a new building was being built. The dungeon was discovered on the build site. Unfortunately, since there were no protections in place for historical sites, it was demolished. Fortunately, the builder did take measurements, which were used to build the replica.
Next is lunch. I went to the Lobster Shanty. There was no air conditioning, and I sat outside in the shade. It was somewhat comfortable. I enjoyed an extremely cheesy Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, as well as a locally made beer. The Lobster Martini, which I had hoped to have, was a bit too pricey for me. DDD #2
By this point, it was almost 2:30, and the heat was really getting to me. In Salem, you need to park your car and walk everywhere. I decided that I would forgot my third destination and return to my hotel for some cool time. This also meant not going to Essex for next DDD restaurant on my list.
After a nice quiet afternoon, I headed to Somerville, just west of Boston, to the Boston Burger Company. The burger spotlighted on DDD has a huge pile of macaroni and cheese on it. It looked really good, but I went with what they call the Green Monster. It had guacamole and pico de gallo. It was amazing, and very messy. I had a different local beer with it.
Well, that is about it for day 2. Tomorrow I will be heading into Boston for the trolley tour. Not sure what I will be doing about meals, since none of the Boston DDD restaurants are anywhere near the trolley route. I guess it is time for some research.
Back at ya tomorrow.
